The Leap of Faith in Hiring and Promoting
Throughout your career, there have been instances when someone took a chance on you. They saw something in you that others may have overlooked. These opportunities for growth and promotion were not solely based on what you presented on paper. They believed in your abilities and gave you a chance to prove yourself. Now, as you find yourself in a position to hire others, shouldn't you do the same?
Evolving Needs and the Limitations of Job Descriptions
Job descriptions are essential for outlining the responsibilities and requirements of a particular role. However, placing too much emphasis on finding the exact fit based on a job description may be shortsighted. The future is unpredictable, and the needs of the organization may change. Instead of rigidly adhering to a fixed set of qualifications, consider looking for qualities that are adaptable and conducive to growth.
Personal Experience: Hiring for Potential, Not Just Experience
During my time at Tulip Telecom, I had the opportunity to hire a few team members. Surprisingly, these individuals did not possess any prior experience directly related to the job description. The role was in Change Management Process. What caught my attention initially were their honesty, energy, and passion. Recognizing their potential, I decided to take them on as trainees for the first six months without any financial compensation. During this period, I put them through rigorous training and assessments.
Years have passed since then, and I have no doubt that each one of them will go far in their careers. They have not only succeeded but also paid forward the opportunity they were given. They understand the value of providing chances to others.
Embracing Opportunities for Growth
Sometimes, opportunities come knocking when we least expect them. Similar to my own experience, I remember a time when I was recruited for a position at Tulip Telecom that I had no prior experience in. It was during a challenging period, and someone took a chance on me. They believed in my potential and offered me the opportunity to learn and grow.
People Deserve a Chance: A Lesson for Every Industry
In life, there are individuals who are worth taking chances on, regardless of the field or industry. While investments in stocks and horses may carry uncertainties, investing in people can yield remarkable returns. It is crucial to recognize the value of providing opportunities to individuals who may not fit the exact mold of a job description but possess the qualities and potential to excel.
