The Inspirational Journey of Stephan van der Merwe: A Tale of Resilience and Compassion

The Chandigarh Freedom Ultrarun is more than just a run; it's a story of human spirit and compassion. This saga began in 2016, sparked by a personal crisis and a heartwarming response. Stephan van der Merwe's friend, Emmanuel, faced a life-threatening situation, losing all kidney function and urgently needing a transplant. The cost for this critical procedure was a daunting Rs. 4 lakhs. This is where Stephan's journey of making a difference began.

Moved by his friend's plight, Stephan decided to run to Patiala, a 70-kilometer stretch, to raise the necessary funds. He shared this idea with Dharminder Sharma, a fellow runner, who immediately agreed to join the cause. Their determination and spirit of empathy resonated with others, and soon, a group of seven set out on this charitable run.

Beyond Borders: A Global Effort
The initiative took a global turn when Stephan's brother cycled 210 kilometers in South Africa, joined by friends who also contributed to the cause. Simultaneously, a friend in the United States swam 7 kilometers, rallying more support. This international wave of solidarity and generosity enabled them to collect enough funds to assist Emmanuel.

The Birth of Chandigarh Freedom Ultrarun
Encouraged by the success and impact of their initial effort, Stephan and his team institutionalized this act of kindness, marking the inception of the Chandigarh Freedom Ultrarun. From 2017 to 2022, through the challenges of Covid-19, the event continued without interruption. Each year brought a new route, and new experiences, but the same unwavering commitment to helping those in need.

Cyclists played a pivotal role, in accompanying and supporting runners throughout their journey. Unlike typical races, this event emphasized support, endurance, and participation over competition. The funds raised went towards various causes, including fighting human trafficking and slavery and aiding the mentally and physically handicapped.

Overcoming Challenges and Continuing the Legacy in 2023
In 2023, the Chandigarh Freedom Ultrarun faced a critical juncture. Stephan felt disheartened by the challenges of organizing the event, considering the immense effort and seemingly small impact. However, a moment of reflection and faith rekindled his determination. A meeting with the organizing team led to significant changes, making the event more inclusive and manageable.

The new route, an out-and-back from Dharminder’s house in New Chandigarh, was a scenic blend of rural landscapes, a canal route, and a passage through a forest. This change, while logistical, also symbolized the adaptability and resilience of the ultrarun community. Seventeen runners, including notable Ultrarunners like Amit Kumar, Munish Jauhar, and Anmol Chandan, embarked on this journey.

Stephan, despite not being in peak running condition, participated with immense willpower. His experience, battling physical pain and fatigue, highlighted the sheer determination and spirit that defines ultrarunning.
This ultrarun is not just about the distance covered; it's about the lives touched and the hope kindled along the way.
The Impact: A Beacon of Hope
The 2023 edition of the Chandigarh Freedom Ultrarun raised Rs.142000 for the LifeSteps Foundation. This significant contribution will provide blankets, dry rations, and other essentials to the needy in and around Chandigarh Tricity. It's a testament to the power of collective effort and the impact a group of determined individuals can have.

The Chandigarh Freedom Ultrarun, spearheaded by Stephan van der Merwe, is a beacon of hope and a symbol of the power of the human spirit. It's a journey that transcends physical endurance, touching lives and making a real difference.
